Recycled Beach Debris, Vancouver Island

Dimensions: 14 x 40 cm

I made this trophy for a tournament we planned to hold at North Chesterman Beach, in front of the Driftwood Café. The tournament was weathered out but I’ll try again another time. I actually found the broken bocce ball on North Chesterman early in 2011. I have studied oystercatchers for years and enjoy incorporating them into my art. They are always inspiring and are one of the few bird species that live here year-round. A true local! The birds are very faithful to certain sites. One of their favourite roost sites and feeding areas is the rocks directly in front of the Wick Inn, hence the name of the tournament. The Maple Leaf came from a ball cap that washed ashore. I had been watching the Olympics and thought it would be a fitting Canadian medal.
