Recycled Beach Debris, Vancouver Island

Dimensions: 53 x 76 cm

I was immedialtey inspired by the Evinrude motor cowling (9.8 horsepower). whijh I found on Long Beach near the Tla-o-qui-aht community of Esowista. The wear pattern on the cowling reminded me of a breaking wave. Right after I named the piece I visited the National Gallery in Ottawa and saw a picture of Hokusai’s The Breaking Wave off Nagasaki. I couldn’t believe the coincidence. The muted colours and subject were a perfect match. It wasn’t until after I saw the picture that I learned of it's name. Reading about the artist later and his influence on modern Japanese art only reinforced the connections for me.
